Florida Scrub-Jay
Land Acquisition
The
Peace River Audubon Society is actively trying to raise funds to
acquire Florida Scrub-Jay habitat in eastern Charlotte County.
The
Florida Scrub-Jay is a threatened
species and Florida's only
endemic (found no where else)
bird. Florida Scrub-Jays
have been declining as their
habitat (scrub) is converted
into housing developments
and other uses.

Columbus
McLeod Memorial Marker
The
Peace River Audubon Society
has been actively raising
funds for an historical marker
to commemorate one of Charlotte
Harbor's first Audubon wardens,
Columbus McLeod.
Mr.
McLeod disappeared on November
30, 1908 from Charlotte Harbor.
Only his destroyed boat and
other evidence were found.
He was presumed to have been
murdered while protecting
wading birds during the plume
trade. He was 60 years old.
Thanks
to George Marks, Larry Linn,
a grant from the Bureau of
Historic Preservation Florida
Department of State, and
donations from local and
state Audubon members, this
goal has been realized and
the marker has been installed
in Ponce de Leon park.
