1st Annual Bird-A-Thon A Great Success

The First Annual PRAS Birdathon was held April 20, 2002. At 7 am, sixteen of us met, split into 7 groups, and started birding! We traveled far and wide in search of birds. In total, we identified 125 species! Congrats to the Mathewson team who identified the most (85) species. Some of the more "exciting" birds included painted bunting, indigo bunting, yellow-billed cuckoo, burrowing owl, crested caracara (I guess it's the northern caracara now), northern gannet, gray kingbird, brown-headed nuthatch, black-necked stilt, dunlin, solitary sandpiper, roseate spoonbill, whip-poor-will, cedar waxwing, roseate tern, and sandwich tern. Several of us had the opportunity to see a couple of new lifers!

One of the best birding spots was the lake at the Charlotte Harbor Buffer Preserve, just south of the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center on Burnt Store Road. We saw several species of raptors, ducks, shore and wading birds, and a marvelous display of an eastern meadowlark.

Seven of us met at the Webb towards the end of the day. We were treated by several common nighthawks, eastern bluebirds, limpkins, a juvenile black-crowned night-heron, and turkeys, but no red-cockaded woodpeckers! On our way out of the park we had a treat, a hunter's dream in fact. We saw several white-tailed deer and a couple of turkeys all foraging together. As the cars approached they halfheartedly scampered away; they looked as if they were playing, especially the fawns. We said goodnight and left the Webb after 13 hours of birding.

Although the totals are not yet in, we likely raised a good amount of money for the Youth Environmental Education Fund. Results should be available for the next White Bird edition. Many thanks to all who participated and sponsored the first annual birdathon!
